A world record – HEIDELBERG supplies leading packaging manufacturer WestRock with two longest sheetfed offset presses ever produced

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG) is a new participant in the UN Global Compact. The United Nations has confirmed the technology company’s inclusion in the world’s largest and most important initiative for sustainable and responsible corporate governance. By joining, HEIDELBERG is underlining its commitment to aligning its corporate strategy with the UN Global Compact’s ten sustainability principles on human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption.

“We see our participation in the UN Global Compact as a logical step in our efforts to have the smallest ecological footprint along the entire value chain in our industry. The company has already actively promoted environmental protection and social responsibility in the past and will further strengthen these efforts by becoming a part of the UN Global Compact,” said Dr. Ludwin Monz, CEO of HEIDELBERG.

HEIDELBERG consistently implements climate strategy: climate neutrality (Scope 1+2) by 2030 at all sites incl. compensation measures

HEIDELBERG sees sustainability as part of its strategic orientation, which forms a basis for long-term economic success. Business activities are harmonized with ecological aspects and fair working conditions. To this end, the company has committed itself to climate neutrality (Scope 1 and 2, excluding Scope 3) at its production, development and sales sites by 2030.

Priority is given to increasing energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and substantially increasing the share of in-house electricity production through renewable energies. As an important milestone in achieving these goals, HEIDELBERG commissioned the Group’s largest photovoltaic system at the Amstetten site in September of this year. Any remaining CO2 emissions that cannot be avoided by means of optimization measures will be neutralized in the future by means of voluntary compensation. From 2040, HEIDELBERG aims to manage without offsetting (Scope 1 and 2, without Scope 3).

Even before joining the UN Global Compact, HEIDELBERG implemented many different measures to support the sustainability principles. These are bundled in the sustainability strategy and regular information on the status and ongoing activities is provided both in the Group’s non-financial statement and in the UN Global Compact (COP) progress report.

Based on the ten universal principles and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, the UN Global Compact, launched in 2000, pursues the vision of an inclusive and sustainable economy. More than 21,000 companies and organizations in over 160 countries are already signatories to the UN Global Compact.

This press release contains forward-looking statements based on assumptions and estimations by the Management Board of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen Aktiengesellschaft. Even though the Management Board is of the opinion that those assumptions and estimations are realistic, the actual future development and results may deviate substantially from these forward-looking statements due to various factors, such as changes in the macro-economic situation, in the exchange rates, in the interest rates, and in the print media industry. “Our goal was to create a product that meets the needs of our customers both aesthetically and functionally. The fact that we have won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2023 for this makes us very proud,” says Ulrich Grimm, technical managing director of Amperfied GmbH. “For us, design is not an end in itself, but must always serve a function in everyday use. Simple and intuitive operation for the consumer is paramount”.

At the end of 2022, HEIDELBERG launched the Wallbox connect.home, heralding a new generation of wall charging stations for electric vehicles. It is the first member of the connect series, which includes home and business charging stations. There is also the possibility of integration with a home photovoltaic system. Good industrial design offers great benefits for both HEIDELBERG and the end user. It improves product perception, increases user-friendliness, promotes branding, and thus increases competitiveness. From development to production, the Wallbox connect.home is made in Germany, as is the entire connect series. All components are designed for reliability and durability as well as for recycling and sustainability.

“The Red Dot Award: Product Design 2023 is an award for the industrial design of HEIDELBERG and its design approach, which combines the past, the future as well as functionality,” explains Bernd Reibl, Head of Industrial Design at HEIDELBERG. “The housing with its silver-metallic frame and black window picks up the characteristic design of our first wallbox – and takes it into the future with practical details such as an integrated cable management system combined with an ergonomically located parking holder for the charging connector”.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the most famous and largest design competitions in the world, with origins dating back to 1955. Under the motto “In search of good design and innovation”, a jury of around 50 international experts evaluates all entries and awards prizes to products that stand out for their high design quality. The official announcement of the winners in all categories took place on 19 June. The award-winning products are being presented in a special exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen and online.
